Clarity

Emerald typically grows in different conditions than other types of Beryl.  It is classified as a type III gemstone.  Type III gemstones are commonly found with cracks fissures and inclusions through out the stone.  A clean and transparent crystal is rare.  As a result most emeralds are oiled as a normal part of the cutting and polishing process.  This is where the open cracks and fissures are filled with a material (traditionally cedarwood oil) that greatly improves the appearance of the stone.  It is safe to assume that any given emerald has been treated in this manner unless it has a report from a reputable gem lab declaring it as untreated.

Lab Created Emerald

Man made emeralds are common, and due to the common inclusions of natural emeralds, are sometimes preferred over the natural emerald.  Lab created emerald has the same chemical composition and crystal structure and will react to gemstone tests in the same way as naturally formed emerald.  In some cases, testing may reveal some indications to help the gemologist determine if is real of man-made.  The terms synthetic, lab grown, created and lab created all refer to a man-made stone.  Man-made gemstones should be described as such by the seller.  It is unfair to call them emerald or natural emerald.  They should be described as:  created, synthetic or lab grown emerald.  Generally speaking,  a man made stone is higher in quality showing optimum color and very high clarity, but man made stones can be of lesser quality.  Man made gemstones are usually much more affordable than a natural one of the same size and quality.
